Alongside our partners in the wider NHS, we will be delivering care closer to home.
We are also making the most of opportunities provided by digital technologies, working with innovative partners to build pioneering new ways of working.
We are on our way to achieving our goals of providing high-quality care for all and being a great place to work.
Government review of the New Hospitals Programme
Following its review of the New Hospitals Programme (NHP), the government announced on 20 January a delay to the delivery of planned new buildings at the Leicester Royal Infirmary and Glenfield Hospital. Originally due to be completed between 2030 and 2032, our local scheme will now be part of a second wave of construction to commence between 2030 and 2035. The majority of the Trusts within the NHP across England are affected.
Three hospitals for the future
Our three acute hospitals will all play key roles in the future of care.
Leicester Royal Infirmary, Glenfield Hospital and Leicester General will function as a comprehensive network designed around the needs of local communities and making best use of expertise and equipment.
Leicester Royal Infirmary, nestled in its iconic city centre location, will provide most of our emergency care.
Glenfield Hospital will be the home of specialist services for patients with heart, vascular, liver and kidney conditions, provided through our renowned clinical teams.
Leicester General Hospital will become a local and regional hub for planned care, including a midwife-led maternity unit and world-class research facilities.
We’ve already invested over £200m to transform care in the diverse communities we serve. We will create:
- a new women’s and family health hospital at the Leicester Royal Infirmary
- a dedicated children’s hospital at the Leicester Royal Infirmary
- expanded critical care facilities at the Leicester Royal Infirmary
- the development of new facilities at Glenfield Hospital
- further separation of planned and emergency care services
- The East Midlands Planned Care Centre at Leicester General Hospital
- A new Endoscopy Unit at Leicester General
Digital transformation
We are making our services fit for the digital era. Digital technology will change the way healthcare is delivered at UHL and is a core part of how we are improving patient care and support our colleagues. Using mobile technologies, our colleagues will have a patient’s health information at their fingertips, to better plan and deliver care. A new Patient Administration System will make the care journey smoother and patients will no longer have to repeat their medical history when meeting a new clinician.
