Clinical Genetics

The Clinical Genetics Service at Leicester Royal Infirmary provides specialist genetic counselling and testing for individuals and families with known or suspected genetic conditions.

Established in 1982 as part of the Trent region’s sub-regional centres, the Leicester Clinical Genetics Service has expanded its reach over time. Since integrating services from Northampton and Kettering General Hospitals in April 2020, it now serves a population of over 2 million across Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland, collectively known as the LNR Genomic Medicine Service.

Our services

Based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, we offer a range of services including:

  • Genetic counselling and diagnostic testing
  • Predictive genetic testing and screening advice
  • Risk assessment for inherited conditions eastgenomics.nhs.uk

We provide care for individuals of all ages, from newborns to adults, and maintain strict confidentiality by keeping patient records within family groupings.

Our service collaborates closely with various specialties, offering joint clinics and multidisciplinary team meetings such as:

  • Antenatally Detected Anomaly Meetings (ADAM)

Training and research

We have strong academic links with the University of Leicester’s Department of Genetics and actively participate in research, clinical trials, and the East Genomic Medicine Service Alliance (GMSA). Our team is involved in various co-creation projects with patients and stakeholder groups, enhancing the integration of genomic medicine into clinical care.

The East GMSA brings together four NHS Trusts – including University Hospitals of Leicester – to ensure patients across the East Midlands and East of England have access to high-quality, personalised genomic testing and care. Led by Cambridge University Hospitals, the alliance supports more than 30 NHS Trusts in embedding genomic medicine into everyday healthcare.

At Leicester, the LNR Genomic Medicine Service serves a diverse population and has strong links with primary care, the University of Leicester, and local research facilities. The service is actively involved in education, research, and community collaboration. The Cancer Genetics team provides specialist care for those at increased risk of cancer due to family history, offering support through dedicated clinics for conditions like breast, bowel, and rare tumour syndromes.
